A Welcome Chat with the Author of "The Wedding Proposal" ~ Sue Moorcroft ~ E-book giveaway!

Today I'd like to welcome to my blog, Sue Moorcroft, Author of the The Wedding Proposal. Out now on e-book and paperback due out 8th September!

Welcome Sue. Just a few questions to find out more about you.

At what age did you realise you had an aptitude for writing and that you wanted to be an author?

In my last year of primary school. I had a crazy teacher, probably related to Tasmanian Devils. He used to frighten the life out of me but he told me that I could write and that one day there would be novels on the shelf with ‘Sue Moorcroft’ on the spine. I was amazed that I could get on the right side of him by making things up.

What drove you to go down the romantic fiction path and not into another genre? Is it because you’re a romantic?

I think I am a romantic, yes. I love romantic fiction, anyway. The best of it leaves me wishing that I were in that relationship with the couple. I suppose I must like the feeling of falling in love and romantic novels allow me to do that every few days!
Writing a love affair is the same feeling only much more intense. It gives me the opportunity to explore why relationships work or don’t work and what complex creatures human beings are.
Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions we make so it’s no wonder that we like to read about it.

If your friends read all of your books would they see themselves in any of your characters?

I hope not … I try very hard not to let that happen and I’m a bit disappointed if somebody tells me that a particular heroine is like me. My characters are mean to be individuals who only exist in my head and on the pages.
There are a couple of people who are not my friends in my books. But that’s fair game, right?

You lived for some time in Malta and your new book “The Wedding Proposal” is based in Malta. Do you think your surroundings inspire you and improve the flow of your writing?

Yes. I like to write at home, in silence. That’s not always possible and I do write on trains, planes and in hotel rooms, too, with real life taking place around me at a terrific volume, but I find it harder. I was really tempted to go to Malta for a week just to write a segment of The Wedding Proposal as it would have been an awesome experience. I couldn’t really justify the time, sadly.
But in terms of research, actually visiting the places in my books is much more satisfactory and satisfying than doing the research via books or the internet.

As well as being a successful novelist, you run writing courses in beautiful locations like the south of France and Umbria in Italy. What sort of people attend your courses? Does any reader have it in them to write?

All kinds of people attend my courses abroad, writing all sorts of fiction or even their autobiography. I’ve had complete beginners, those moving from short stories to novels, getting back into writing after a break, just wanting to spend time with other writers or published writers working on a new novel. There’s something freeing about being away from work and home responsibilities.
I don’t suppose every reader has it in them to write or have the desire to do so. There are plenty who have both, though. A reader is already used to inhabiting the world of fiction so writing can be a natural development for them.

What did it feel like to win the “Best Romantic Read Award” in 2011 for “Love and Freedom”?

Wow, that was amazing. There was a bestselling author on the shortlist so I had made up my mind that she would win. I was genuinely staggered when they read out my name and I just stood there. Someone had to shove me up to accept the award. I was in a daze for the rest of the evening but it was a time of euphoria. The award sits on the windowsill next to my chair in the sitting room.

Being romantic fiction your books attract thousands of female fans. Have you ever been contacted by male fans saying they’ve loved your books?

I have. Sometimes they read my stuff because they know me through Twitter, Facebook, workshops etc and they buy a book out of solidarity or curiosity and send me messages saying that they’re surprised how much they enjoyed it. But I do get male readers who have no other contact with me, too. Interestingly, my books in translation seem to attract as many messages from men as from women.
And I have a male friend who is single and says reading my books on the Tube earns him a lot of interested looks from females. I’m trying to work out how I can make that benefit me in marketing terms.

Being a novelist, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?

Aside from the obvious, such as air, water and food, I’d say my computer. We’re surgically attached.

I’ve heard you’re a lover of Formula 1 racing. That seems the polar opposite to being a romantic novelist. What draws you to Formula 1?

I’ve never known. I’m just absolutely riveted by it – not just the races but the practices and qualifying and every bit of gossip and news I can access. I’m sure I must irritate other people! I come from a family who like sport but I thought I had avoided the fanatic gene until I saw a race about twenty years ago. I was hooked and haven’t missed many races since then.

Now, Sue Moorcroft, what do you do to relax when you’re not writing, apart from watching Formula 1?

I read, do Zumba, yoga, FitStep and piano classes. The occasional weekend at a spa is very welcome and I like to travel - the nice safe kind of travel, though, not the hiking through war zones kind!

Thanks for inviting me on to Bookalicious.

Can a runaway bride stop running?

Elle Jamieson is an unusually private person, in relationships as well as at work – and for good reason. But when she’s made redundant, with no ties to hold her, Elle heads off to a new life in sunny Malta.

Lucas Rose hates secrets – he prides himself on his ability to lay his cards on the table and he expects nothing less from others. He’s furious when his summer working as a divemaster is interrupted by the arrival of Elle, his ex, all thanks to his Uncle Simon’s misguided attempts at matchmaking.

Forced to live in close proximity, it’s hard to ignore what they had shared before Lucas’s wedding proposal ended everything they had. But then an unexpected phone call from England allows Lucas a rare glimpse of the true Elle. Can he deal with Elle’s hidden past when it finally comes to light?

Sue Moorcroft writes romantic novels of dauntless heroines and irresistible heroes. Is this Love? was nominated for the Readers’ Best Romantic Read Award. Love & Freedom won the Best Romantic Read Award 2011 and Dream a Little Dream was nominated for a RoNA in 2013. Sue received three nominations at the Festival of Romance 2012, and is a Katie Fforde Bursary Award winner. She’s a past vice chair of the RNA and editor of its two anthologies.
Sue also writes short stories, serials, articles, writing ‘how to’ and is a competition judge and creative writing tutor.

Sue’s latest book The Wedding Proposal is available as an ebook from 4 August 2014 and as a paperback from 8 September.

BOOK BLURB

Set against the backdrop of small town America on the eve of World War II, Defiant Heart features two extraordinary characters and one unforgettable love story.
In the spring of 1941, young Jon Meyer’s family dies in a tragic accident, and he is sent to live in a small Indiana town. He arrives to find himself unwanted and shunned.
Mary Dahlgren is the daughter of the town’s mayor. A pretty girl, she could have the pick of the boys in town, including Vernon King, the star of the vaunted high school basketball team. To the chagrin of her friends, though, Mary has always been more interested in books than boys. That is, until she meets Jon.
But Jon and Mary are kept apart by an insidious campaign orchestrated by Mary’s father, who perceives their relationship a threat to his political aspirations, and Vernon, to whom Jon is a rival for Mary’s affections. For months Jon is subjected to a painful ostracism. Then, just when the young man’s earnestness and perseverance begin to win over many of the townsfolk and it appears that love may conquer all, tragedy strikes.
As the country is caught up in war, so too are the young lovers swept up in events beyond their control, leaving both fighting for their very lives. If, against the odds, they are to be together, each will need to find the strength, the courage and the resourcefulness that beat only in a defiant heart.

MY REVIEW

It has been quite a while since a book brought me to tears; made me laugh and made me angry. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It wasn't just a book of romance it was so much more and a great wartime fiction novel.

I loved the main character Jon Meyer. Sadly he lost his parents and brother in a car accident and was sent to stay with a grandmother he hardly knew who seemed to resent him being there. It seemed that life would get harder for him, and you start feeling sorry for him for the word go. Jon then fell in love with Mary but her Father, in fear of scandal, refused to let her see him as it may destroy his political career. He was bullied at school by Vernon, the sports star, and his gang of followers. Through it all though, he retained his dignity and came across as a really strong character who could triumph through adversity.

There were some other great characters in the book. Ben Wheeler, a local pilot, who took Jon under his wing. Ben's own son was away in the military; His English teacher at the school and Walt who worked in the local hardware store, where Jon got a job and then lost it. Mary is also a great character who comes across as strong and determined to get her man.

After being accused of a crime he didn't commit, Jon's punishment was to be sent away to join the army. This left Mary heartbroken as she had continued to see Jon in secret. The war scenes in the book are extremely well written and moving. Quite horrific in parts. Jon proved himself to be a great role model throughout the book and was extremely likeable.

I could write so much more about this book, but don't want to give away the plot line. I had a job to put it down, but had to when I realised I'd been reading all evening and I only had 4 hours left before I had to get up for work. Needless to say I finished it in two sittings. I would certainly love to read other books by this author as I love the depth he gave his characters. One of his other books is previewed at the end of the e-book and I will certainly be buying it.

** I received this book free of charge in order to provide a review. This did not influence my review in anyway **

Book Review - The Critical Path by D.J.Johnson

Title - The Critical Path

Author - D.J.Johnson

Publisher - D J Johnson

Pages - 270

ASIN: B00A3DCCJ6

Blurb from Amazon
A dark, disturbing story of a man's life torn apart, and what he must do to rebuild it.

Travelling home on the Underground, Matt, a twenty-nine-year-old Londoner, is subjected to a brutal assault. As he struggles to come to terms with his ordeal, he is forced to examine the changing relationships with his partner Laura, his friends, family and Oliver, the benevolent stranger who took him to hospital.

Chased by nightmarish memories and beset by doubts regarding identity, masculinity and how to live when long-cherished planning has failed and certainty vanished, he withdraws into paranoia, deceit and the need to ensure he is never a victim again. He questions the beliefs and politics that shaped him, their origins and whether they are still valid.

Increasingly distant from the people around him and the compassionate individual he was, Matt realises that if he is to retain his humanity, he must forge a fresh outlook and a new way of living.

MY REVIEW

I found this book very moving. It's content was extremely thought provoking. The seriousness of the assault was well written and heartbreaking. The subject was very sensitively handled, with some obviously good research and I found it to be a very powerful story line.

Matt's character was very well written. The way the relationships between Matt & Laura, and Matt and Oliver (the good samaritan) were portrayed, only enhanced the story and made the book a thoroughly good read. This book was un-put-downable and I read it in one sitting. It is on offer at Amazon at a great price for e-books, so I recommend you grab a copy!

I would love to read more books by this author and look forward to the next book he has to offer.

This is a story line that will stay with me for a long time.

EXCERPT
“Oh, Maura, it’s beautiful!” Janelle stood, touching the exquisite dress reverently. The warm ivory silk was perfect for her coloring, and the design of the dress showed off her petite figure to its best. The upper parts of the sleeves were full, but not as puffy as the popular leg-o-mutton creations Janelle disliked. The sleeves from the elbow to the wrist were tight, fitted to her forearms, and were encrusted with seed pearls and tiny diamonds. The skirt was long and full, brushing the floor as she walked. It was longer in the back to create a short train.
Richard had nearly come to blows with Miss Abbott over the scandalously low neckline. In the end it’d stayed, the only concession being a short, lace, sleeveless jacket that buttoned in the front with tiny mother-of-pearl buttons, covering the exposed skin, but still allowing the neckline as originally designed. Her veil was large and multilayered, made of ivory lace attached to a simple head covering. The veil covered her head and shoulders and fell down past her fingertips. Sewn into the veil were hundreds of tiny pearls and diamonds, identical to those on her sleeves. The dress’s design was simple yet elegant, which Janelle preferred to the often overblown styles of the day.

Wedding dress designs change over the years. White wedding gowns, while traditionally indicating the ‘pureness’ of the bride, are more a choice than a requirement. Janelle’s choice is to have an ivory gown as it suits her coloring better than the starkness of white, and, in the candle-lit hall downstairs, the white would appear to be to be ivory anyway.
The couple spent much of the winter working out all the details, including visits to Miss Abbott, the professional seamstress in the next town, for fittings of the specially designed gown.
In the meantime, there were the usual preparations for their wedding. Invitations went out to family, friends, and neighbors – two-hundred people. Plans for the hall decorations took shape. The carpenter built the raised platform where the wedding would take place. The kitchen staff, aided by Maura and Janelle, as well as many of the ladies in the neighborhood, made plans for the feast after the ceremony. The flowers, probably the trickiest part of it all, needing to be fresh and perfect for the ceremony had to be ordered at just the right time – both for decorations and for the bouquets the women carried.
The wedding party was all family – Janelle’s siblings and Richard’s brothers – plus Maura. Janelle sisters each made their dresses from material Janelle sent them. The men would all wear black pants and swallowtail coats with the ivory shirts the LeDuc Farm seamstresses made for them.
After her father’s death over a year ago, everyone wanted this day to be perfect for Janelle. It was shaping up to be the ‘Event of the Year’ in the Lake Galloway community. Little did they know …

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Writing ‘runs in the family.’ My mother is a multi-published non-fiction author, and my two brothers make a living writing, one as a newspaperman, the other as a copywriter. My sister edits her church newsletter.

My father was a school teacher/reading specialist (later an elementary school principal) when I was little. During story-time one night when I was about four years old, I stopped him and asked how he said the same thing every time he read that story to me. That night, he started teaching me to read. It began a life-long love affair between books and me – for that, I am grateful.

In junior high, I wrote short stories to entertain classmates. In high school, one English assignment was to write my autobiography. In the teacher-specified chapter entitled ‘Future Plans,’ being a published writer topped the list.

After a college professor told me I ‘couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag,’ I stopped writing for many years. Then, in the late 1970s, I wrote an article for “World Radio News” (San Diego, CA) about our amateur radio club providing communications for a March of Dimes Walkathon. The ‘WRN’ editor used my article word-for-word.

In early 2002, between jobs and wanting to write, I sought a third-shift position and used the ‘free time’ to write what became ‘Janelle’s Time.’ When it was complete, I shelved it. In 2009, the WIP came off the shelf. By August 2011, it was ready – at last - for submission.

In 2009, I started a Twitter account, @Writers_Cafe. I feel as if I’ve earned a degree in ‘book publishing’ since then! You can learn so much from over 14,000 followers.

I penned an article about @RileyCarney, a Colorado teen, and very prolific YA fantasy author, who heads her own non-profit literacy project. Never officially published, countless people have seen it, thanks to Twitter retweets and some carefully chosen email inboxes.

On New Year’s Day, 2010, I went ‘live’ with my blog. It has evolved into a combination of chronicling my writing journey and hopefully helpful posts on publishing industry topics.

In the fall of 2011, I added ‘DIY Interviews’ to my blog (see the left column of my blog for details on doing your own interview). Several authors have submitted ‘interviews’ to date.

Janelle’s Time is Book 1 of my TIME Series. Book 2, ‘Moria’s Time’ was my NaNoWriMo project for 2011. I reached 51,000 words on November 26! Now, I have to finish that book, and three more in the series: ‘Adelle’s Time,’ ‘Logan’s Time,’ and ‘Clarissa’s Time.’

Moving into 2012, I’m very excited about the release of ‘Janelle’s Time.’ It’s the culmination of a life-long dream – and is only the beginning of my retirement career. I’m working on “Moria’s Time,” book 2 of the Time Series.
My husband, Pete, and I have been married over forty-three years – no children. We lived in Massachusetts for thirteen years, and then moved to New Hampshire for eleven years. In 1992, we moved to Florida.

Could it be because this complete stranger just offered Penelope one million dollars to carry her wealthy brother’s baby?

But Cimil’s brother isn’t your everyday millionaire. In fact, he gives new meaning to the word hot.

EXCERPT:
Wondering which screw in her head had come loose this time, twenty-four-year-old Emma Keane strapped a parachute to her back in preparation for yet another fun-filled jungle mission.

“Dammit! Stop wiggling!” she barked over her shoulder. “And that had better be your flashlight!”

Well, actually, it was a cranky, rather large warrior named Brutus strapped to her back and wearing the parachute because she had yet to find time for skydiving lessons.

Dork.

In any case, looking like a ridiculous, oversized baby kangaroo wasn’t enough to stop her from making this nocturnal leap into enemy territory—Maaskab territory. She had scores to settle.

Emma sucked in a deep breath, the roar of the plane’s large engines and Brutus’s growls making it difficult to find her center—the key to winning any battle. And not freak out.

Funny. If someone had told her a year ago that she’d end up here, an immortal demigoddess engaged to the infamous God of Death and War, she would have said, “Christ! Yep! That toootally sounds about right.”

Why the hell not? She’d lived the first twenty-two years of her life with Guy—a nickname she’d given her handsome god—obsessed with his seductive voice, a voice only she could hear. Turned out, after they finally met face-to-face, their connection ran blood deep. Universe deep, actually. A match made by fate.

Emma rubbed her hands together, summoning the divine power deep within her cells. One blast with her fingertips and she could split a man right down the middle.

“Careful where you put those,” Guy said, cupping himself.

Emma gazed up at his smiling face and couldn’t help but admire the glorious, masculine view. Sigh. She knew she’d been born to love him, flaws—enormous ego and otherworldly bossiness—and all.

His smile melted away. “Please change your mind, my sweet. Stay on the plane, and let me do your fighting.”

“Can’t do that,” she replied. “The Maaskab took my grandmother, and I’m going to be the one to get her back. Even if I have to kill Tommaso to do it.”

Guy shook his head. “No. You are to let me deal with him.”

Emma felt her immortal blood boil. She’d trusted Tommaso once, and he’d betrayed her. Almost gotten her killed, too. But she’d known—well, she’d thought—it wasn’t Tommaso’s fault. He’d been injected with liquid black jade, an evil substance that could darken the heart of an angel. That’s why, after he’d been captured and mortally wounded, she’d begged the gods to cure him.

Then she did the unthinkable: she’d put her faith in him again.

Stupid move.

He’d turned on her a second time, the bastard. Yes, his betrayal—done of his own free will—was her prize on that fateful night almost one year ago when her grandmother showed up on their doorstep in Italy, leading an army of evil Maaskab priests, her mind clearly poisoned.

“If Tommaso hadn’t helped her escape, we could’ve saved her,” she said purely to vent, because she really wanted to cry. But the fiancĂ©e of the God of Death and War didn’t cry. Especially in front of the hundred warriors riding shotgun on the plane tonight.

Okay, maybe one teeny tiny tear while no one’s looking.

“Do not give up hope, Emma.” Guy clutched her hand. “And do not forget…whatever happens, I love you. Until the last ray of sunlight. Until the last flicker of life inhabits this planet.”

Brutus groaned and rolled his eyes, clearly annoyed by the sappy chatter.

Emma elbowed him in the ribs. “Shush! And how can you, of all people, be uncomfortable with a little affection? Huh? You bunk with eight dudes every night. That’s gross by the way. Not the dude part. I’m cool with that. But eight, big, sweaty warriors all at once? Yuck. So don’t judge me because I’m into the one-man-at-a-time rule. That’s messed up, Brutus.”

Brutus growled and Guy chuckled.

In truth, Emma didn’t know what Brutus was into or how he and his elite team slept, but she loved teasing him. She figured that sooner or later she’d find the magic words to get Brutus to speak to her.

No luck yet.

Accepting a temporary defeat, she shrugged and turned her attention back to the task at hand. She took one last look at her delicious male—seven feet of solid muscle with thick blue-black waves of hair and bronzed skin. Sigh. “Okay. I’m ready,” she declared boldly. “Let’s kill some Scabs and get my granny!”

She glanced over her other shoulder at Penelope, their newest family member. Her dark hair was pulled into a tight ponytail that accentuated the anger simmering in her dark green eyes. Pissed would be a serious understatement.

Emma didn’t blame her. What a cluster.

“Ready?” Emma asked.

“You better believe it,” Penelope replied. “These clowns picked the wrong girl to mess with.”

Guy frowned as they leaped from the plane into the black night.

AVAILABLE AT:

BLURB:
“If you love her, set her free. If she comes back, she’s yours. If she doesn’t…Christ! Stubborn woman! Hunt her down, and bring her the hell back; she’s still yours according to vampire law.”--Niccolo DiConti, General of the Vampire Queen’s Army.

THE DETERMINED VAMPIRE: Niccolo DiConti has faithfully served as leader of Her Majesty’s army for over a millennium, but he’d rather sunbathe in the Sahara than spend another gruelling day under his demented queen’s command. However, no one has ever left her side and lived to tell. So when a powerful goddess prophesies he will meet his salvation—a human woman he must turn into a vampire with her consent—he eagerly rises to the challenge. After all, how hard could it be to seduce a human female into taking the immortal plunge? Harder than he thinks. Because his mate won’t be born for another three centuries, and when he wakes up in the goddess’ tomb, not only is his life a mess, but his destined female isn’t about to settle for a coldhearted vampire. Can he win her over before it’s too late? Not if his enemies have anything to do with it.

AN UNWILLING BRIDE: On the night Helena Strauss meets the fierce, devastatingly handsome vampire who saves her life in the jungles of Mexico, she knows her world will be forever changed. Because an attraction this mind blowing only comes along once in a lifetime—or existence. And when he claims she is his one true mate, destined to be his for all eternity, it’s a fairytale come true. So what if her knight in shining armour is a vampire? Nobody’s perfect. But discovering the powerful, overbearing immortal doesn’t “do love”? Deal breaker. Helena will flee and set out to accomplish the impossible…sever the otherworldly bond between them. And it turns out, Helena is just the leverage Niccolo’s enemies need to break the mighty warrior and wipe out his people.

WARNING: This book contains sexual content (For some of you, not enough. I know. I’ll try harder, I promise.), adult language, hot men with unrealistically large physical characteristics, female whining (What? I whine all the time. It’s a healthy form of venting!), silliness, snark, sarcasm, and blatant abuse of the English language.

 ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Before taking up a permanent residence in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mimi spent time living near NYC (became a shopaholic), in Mexico City (developed a taste for very spicy food), and Arizona (now hates jumping chollas, but pines for sherbet sunsets). Her love of pre-Hispanic culture, big cities, and romance inspires her to write when she’s not busy with kids, work, and life…or getting sucked into a juicy novel.

She hopes that someday, leather pants for men will make a big comeback and that her writing might make you laugh when you need it most.
