Book Review - The Boyfriend - Michelle Frances - #PsychologicalThriller

AUTHOR - Michelle Frances

GENRE - Psychological Thriller

SYNOPSIS -

He loves you. He loves you not.

Amy is fiercely independent, with a high-powered career, a flat of her own and tight-knit friendships. But as she approaches her thirtieth birthday, she can’t help but rue the one thing she doesn’t have – a relationship.

When Amy comes around following a serious fall, she doesn’t remember anything from the last six months. Not even the upcoming skiing holiday at her aunt’s luxurious chalet in Val d’Isère with her mum and best friends to celebrate her birthday. And she certainly doesn’t remember being swept off her feet by the handsome Dr Jack Stewart . . .

Jack is the full package – charming, caring and devoted to Amy. Everyone is smitten with him, but as the week goes on, Amy begins to find Jack’s presence chilling. Is her broken mind playing tricks? Or is the perfect boyfriend really too good to be true?

For fans of The Chalet and The Hunting Party, The Boyfriend is a twisting anti-love story that will keep you guessing with every page, by Michelle Frances, author of the number one bestselling sensation The Girlfriend.

Amy comes round after a fall and wakes up in hospital, but she is suffering from amnesia.

She has a boyfriend, Dr Jack Stewart, but she doesn't remember him or anything about the last few months she has spent with him.

It is labelled under the genre "psychological thriller". It started off with promise and I was enjoying it, but the more it went on the more frustrated I got. It just got a little far fetched to me. Amy started getting on my nerves.

There were no thrills like I would expect there to be in a book sitting in the psychological thriller section.

The characters themselves, were well written and mostly likeable but it just seemed to get a little non-sensical.

Who doesn't love a good psychological thriller. Even better when it keeps you guessing all the way through. If this is your thing, then you will love the latest book from Louise Jensen, who has really mastered the psychological thriller genre.

This is about the Walsh family. On the surface a good well respected family. Underneath, full of secrets. It's told from the perspective of Aiden (Dad), Lucy (Mum) and Connor (Son). Kieron the other son is talked about frequently but it is never told from his perspective. A lot of their life revolves around Kieron, who is ill.
I found Connor a friendly likeable character who was somewhat overlooked in a way by his Mother, who was always running around after Kieron, due to Kieron's illness and frequent hospital visits. Aiden seems to somehow have his own secrets which he is hiding. Lucy annoyed me somewhat but she is a good Mother, and I did warm to her as the boy went on. I did wonder how many families could hide so many different secrets, and it was a good way through the book before it all started being pieced together.

This is a well written book, with many twists and turns throughout, and it leads you down the garden path sometimes, so what you think is going on, is something entirely different. Very clever! I was drawn in right from the beginning.

I think it's another triumph from Louise Jensen, who has definitely mastered the craft of the psychological thriller. I think she's up there with some of the best.

SYNOPSIS

Daisey Garrett wakes up in a hospital bed. She remembers her boyfriend has left her for another woman, but she doesn’t remember what happened to her the night she was attacked in her own home.

Daisey shouldn’t be alive but against all odds, she’s survived an ordeal most would never recover from.

But Daisey’s mind is broken. She’s on edge, drinking too much and, despite the painful breakup, finds herself in bed with her ex, Luke. And while she desperately tries to keep herself together, she can’t shake the feeling that she is being watched.

Yet the missing pieces of that fateful summer night are beginning to surface…

The lies she told the police.

The lies Luke told her.

Daisey’s memory is flickering like a faulty light bulb, flashing with images just out of reach.

She can’t remember. She mustn’t.

An absolutely gripping, addictive page-turner, The Woman Inside takes you within the tangled mess of people’s lives and the dark secrets they hold close. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, Before I Go to Sleep and The Wife Between Us.

I really love a good psychological thriller, and this was no exception. I had never heard of the Author before and I'm always happy to try someone different. This was book 4 in the Dan Riley series, but I haven't actually read any of the others and this was not a problem. It is a perfect standalone novel.

Detective Riley is a person who you would really want fighting your corner if you were in trouble, and Daisey was lucky she had him in hers. Daisey although vulnerable was quite a strong character and very likeable, as was Detective Riley. Some other characters not quite so likeable.

After about 52% of the book, I had an inkling on who was going to be involved in the murders, but I kept reading and boy did I not see the twist coming! This book had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down. I think it's the quickest I've read a book in quite some time.

I will certainly be reading the other 3 in the series though as I loved this!

The Stolen Sisters ~ Louise Jensen ~ Psychological Thriller ~ Book Review

TITLE - The Stolen Sisters

AUTHOR - Louise Jensen

GENRE - Psychological Thriller

PUBLICATION DAY - 01st October 2020

SYNOPSIS -
Sisterhood binds them. Trauma defines them. Will secrets tear them apart?

Leah's perfect marriage isn't what it seems but the biggest lie of all is that she's learned to live with what happened all those years ago. Marie drinks a bit too much to help her forget. And Carly has never forgiven herself for not keeping them safe.

Twenty years ago The Sinclair Sisters were taken. But what came after their return was far worse. Can a family ever recover, especially when not everyone is telling the truth...?

This is an intriguing read, with characters weaving a web of lies and deceit.

The Novel starts off with the abduction of 3 young sisters, Carly and younger Sisters, twins Leah and Marie. It moves in chapters, between the past and the present, from the voice of each girl. The Author has blended the chapters really well.

I loved Carly's character. She seemed wise beyond her years. She was strong, on the whole, yet somehow vulnerable. She thought on her feet, and was very protective of her Sisters.

It was good how the Author showed the way in which each of the characters in the adult years, were dealing with the trauma they had suffered during the abduction. Each dealt in vastly different ways; three completely opposite characters, especially the twins, who were nothing alike.

There was so much mystery involved. Many questions needed answering. Who was the abductor? Why were they abducted? What was the source of the mystery notes? You literally don't find any of this out right until the end of the book, and all the theories I had were completely wrong! There is much more intrigue in the book, but I don't want to add any spoilers.

I had to keep reading and just couldn't put the book down. Its a very well written novel that makes you feel for the characters and keep you guessing.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for allowing me to review this.

The Date ~ Author Louise Jensen ~ Book review ~ Psychological Thriller Book Review

TITLE - The Date

SYNOPSIS - Something bad has happened to Alison Taylor.

Her Saturday night started normally. Recently separated from her husband, Ali has been persuaded by her friends to go on a date with a new man. She is ready, she is nervous, she is excited. She is about to take a step into her new future.

By Sunday morning, Ali’s life is unrecognisable. She wakes, and she knows that something is wrong. She is home, she is alone, she is hurt and she has no memory of what happened to her.

Worse still, when she looks in the mirror, Ali doesn’t recognise the face staring back at her. She can’t recognise her friends and family. And she can’t recognise the person who is trying to destroy her…

Who doesn't look a good psychological thriller? Especially one written by Louise Jensen.
This was quite a frightening read and made me glad that I'm not involved in the world of internet dating!

Having separated from her Husband, Ali embarked on an internet date. What happened on the date and after it, is a mystery. The thought of waking up at home and not knowing what had happened to her, was a scary concept.

Who is taunting Ali and why. I kept coming up with so many possibilities in my head, only to have a curve ball thrown in my path. There were curve balls galore in this thriller.

This is another great read from Louise Jensen, who can certainly hold her own against some of the top psychological thriller writers. You certainly won't see the end coming!

SYNOPSIS

You thought you’d escaped your past

It’s been twenty years since Neve’s best friend Chloe went missing. Neve has never recovered and promised herself she’d never go back to that place.

But secrets can come back to haunt you

When Neve receives news that her first boyfriend Jamie has gone missing, she’s forced to return. Jamie has vanished without a trace in a disappearance that echoes the events of all those years ago. Somebody is watching and will stop at nothing until the truth about what took place that night is revealed …

Darren O'Sullivan was a new author to me, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. All I knew was I loved a good psychological thriller and hoped that this would be one for me.
I was not disappointed.

The main character for the book was Neve. I instantly warmed to her as there was something vulnerable about her. After her best friend went missing when they were young, she escaped her home town saying she'd never go back. She started a new life, and eventually became a part owner in a cafe with a friend.  Her demons would not go away. Her life was becoming a mess. Strange things were happening. Then her first love Jamie went missing and she knew she had to go home.

The Author has developed some great characters in this book. Neve definitely being my favourite. I enjoyed how the relationship between Neve and her estranged Dad was written. It was very heartwarming.

The way the book went back in time and then brought us back to the present, was very well written and it helped you to connect with all the characters. There were several characters in the book, but it never got to the stage where you were confused about who was who, due to the way it was written.

There were so many twists and turns in the book, with a big one at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and recommend it to those who like psychological thrillers by Authors like Louise Jensen and Teresa Driscoll. I am now seeking out more books by this Author.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in return for an honest review.

MY BOOK REVIEW

I have read a couple of books by this author and they have always kept me gripped. Unfortunately, although this was a good read, it wasn't the same sort of story line so it didn't keep my attention in the same way.

This is an uncomfortable story of a teachers love affair with his pupils, and I'm not quite sure where the book fits in the genre of psychological thriller. Therefore I put the book down several times and didn't pick it up for days. This meant I lost the thread a bit, and had to go back and re-read a few pages to refresh my memory.

I found it hard to engage with the characters, and felt they didn't have much substance. I wanted to know more about them. I just had trouble connecting with any of them.

I will certainly buy other books by C L Taylor as I've enjoyed her others, but sadly this one was just not for me.

MY REVIEW

Firstly I'd like to say thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher to allow me to read this book before it's publication date in October.

Louise has become a best selling author with her great psychological thrillers, and this is another book that makes you see why.

The books main two characters are Laura and her Daughter Tilly. Having lost her Husband in a tragic accident, Laura needs to rebuild her life, not just for herself but also for Tilly. When she is assisted by a stranger after falling ill, her life takes her and Tilly on a different path.

This started off as a sad tale, but led into a feeling of hope for the future, for both Mother and Daughter. Oak Leaf Organics seems to be just what they both needed to get their life back on track. But in true Louise Jensen style, nothing is ever quite what it seems, and that is why I love her books.

There is nothing pink and fluffy about this book, it's just full of suspense, intrigue and more suspense. The book is so full of twists and turns that you don't know who to believe and who to trust. A note appears that says "Trust no-one" and that about sums the story up.

If you want a book that grips you and makes you want to keep turning the page, then this psychological thriller is just the one for you. It's out in October, but you can pre-book it now from the link above or order it from your local library.

Book Review - The Surrogate by Louise Jensen - Psychological Thriller ~ #Bookouture

TITLE - The Surrogate

AUTHOR - Louise Jensen

GENRE - Psychological Thriller

PUBLISHER - Bookouture

PUBLICATION DATE - 27th September 2017

SYNOPSIS -

‘You know that feeling? When you want something so badly, you almost feel you’d kill for it?’
Be careful what you wish for…

Kat and her husband Nick have tried everything to become parents. All they want is a child to love but they are beginning to lose hope. Then a chance encounter with Kat’s childhood friend Lisa gives them one last chance.

Kat and Lisa were once as close as sisters. The secrets they share mean their trust is for life... Or is it?

Just when the couple’s dream seems within reach, Kat begins to suspect she’s being watched and Nick is telling her lies.

Are the cracks appearing in Kat’s perfect picture of the future all in her head, or should she be scared for the lives of herself and her family?

How far would you go, to protect everything you love?

From the no. 1 bestselling author of The Sister and The Gift, this is an unputdownable psychological thriller which asks how far we will go to create our perfect family. Fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl will be utterly hooked.

This is a book that I think will stay with me for some time. It introduces us to Kat and her Husband Nick. Despite trying desperately for a child and having suffered two failed adoptions, they don't know where to turn. Then along comes Kat's Childhood friend Lisa, whom she hasn't seen for some time, and offers them the answer to their prayers. She will be their surrogate. Why though? After all this time of not being in contact with Kat due to something that happened in their past, why would she make this very generous offer?

All the characters in this book seemed to have secrets. No-one talked to anyone and whatever it was they were hiding, they all kept it close to their chest. This included Kat and Nick, along with Lisa. It got so I didn't really trust any of them. What had gone on in their past that they didn't want to share?Nick was hiding things from Kat and she was hiding things from him. What had gone on in their Childhood and early adulthood they didn't want each other to know? The Author had a way of filling your head with so many questions that you just needed to keep reading.

I really liked Lisa and felt sorry for her, but then introduce Richard, Nicks best friend into the mix, who appears to have a real dislike for Lisa, and I wonder if I am missing something. Is she as nice as she appears to be? I started to be very mistrusting of her, but couldn't work out why.

The Author has created some fabulous characters in this book, all with their own story to tell. I was totally immersed in the book and just couldn't put it down. I thought I had worked it all out in my head what was going on with each of them, then BANG, along comes the epilogue and twists everything on it's head that I thought I had worked out. What a powerful ending to a book.

This was a well plotted and most intriguing read, and I highly recommend it. I am now going to read another of the Author's books as if she writes them all as well as this one, I know I will not be able to put it down.

Louise is a USA Today Bestselling Author, and lives in Northamptonshire with her husband, children, madcap dog and a rather naughty cat.

The Sister was nominated for The Goodreads Awards Debut of 2016. Louise's third psychological thriller, The Surrogate, is out now.

MY REVIEW

Well what a deceiving book title this is. I couldn't put it down and read it quicker than I've read a book in a while and I'm a slow reader!

The whole book takes place over a day, and is extremely well written, with so much content packed into it.

It is written from the perspective of Businessman, Husband and Father, Paul Strom. Well what an arrogant, self-centered, egotistical man he is. There are some great chauvinistic comments, like when talking about women saying they should "Look good, take care of the kids" and referring to his wife saying "At home these days, I am king of our castle and my queen needs to fall back in line". I really disliked him. But how well written his character was!

There are some great lines written in this book from Paul's' perspective and they actually make you laugh in places. I kept wondering if I knew anyone like this or even if someone like this actually existed. If they do then I'm glad they're not in my life! It makes you think a lot when you're reading it, about what some women may well go through in real life. In parts it's some underlying form of domestic abuse.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book, and when I read the synopsis that this was a psychological thriller, I couldn't understand after reading the first 100 pages or so of the book, where the thriller part was going to come in to the story. I soon realised that the author was teasing us and very cleverly leading us into a real roller-coaster ride.

This book has such a twist at the end, so without saying anymore and giving any spoilers, you'll just have to read it and find out for yourself!

I look forward to reading more from this author.
