SYNOPSIS

When divorced mom Sadie Ford realises her 17-year-old daughter Scarlett has run away to Paris, all she can imagine are terrorist bombings and sex slaves. After learning her daughter chased a French exchange student home, Sadie hops on the next plane in pursuit. She joins forces with the boy’s father, Auguste, and the two attempt to find the missing teens before they can stumble into more trouble.

The chase takes Sadie and Auguste to the seedier side of Marseille, where their own connection is ignited. Since the divorce, Sadie has devoted herself to raising kids and putting her dreams on hold, but when her daughter needs her most, Sadie finds that concrete barrier to life beginning to crack. In her journey, she learns the difference between watching the hours pass and living.

I always want to read anything that is based in Paris. It's the most beautiful City in Europe to me and I have been there many times.

I enjoyed this book for many different reasons. I admired how the author had made Sadie such a strong character, giving her the guts to travel from the USA to Paris, to find her headstrong Daughter who had runaway to be with a French boy Luc, she had met in the USA. But I was annoyed that she was naive and totally unprepared and considering she seemed such a wise Mother, she really frustrated me at times!

The search led Sadie on a merry dance all across Paris. I loved the descriptions of all the sites and sounds of Paris, and could picture the City as Sadie trudged through the streets in her unsuitable sandals. The beautiful Notre Dame and it's wonderful setting on the edge of the Seine; The Arc de Triomphe and the chaotic drivers that drive around it, beeping their horns at anyone who does something they don't like. It's a unique place and a scary place to drive. The Author really brought the city to life.

Meeting up with Luc's Father Auguste, took Sadie on further adventures in pursuit of the two runaways. This time to Marseille. I never thought of it having a seedy side so that made it an even more intriguing place. Again the descriptive writing made it somewhere you could really picture as you read sentence by sentence.

I would have liked a more romantic idea of why the youngsters ran away and I didn't feel their reason was very gripping, but then I suppose it could be feasible (no spoilers). I would have just liked something a bit more either romantic or gripping. Somehow though, it was as if the book struggled to find its Niche between a romantic novel and a crime novel. It wasn't really one or the other, but somehow it did work.

I enjoyed how the relationship between Sadie and Auguste developed and found that a lovely part of the book. I would have liked to have seen a bit more about what would happen with them.

All in all, despite wrestling with where this book sits genre wise, I did enjoy it and read it in a couple of sittings. I would be interested to read more from the author.
